Contact Lenses and Make-up: Which one goes first?
Nancy met this guy, John—a handsome, strapping 6footer—at a coffee shop. John also thought Nancy was quite attractive so they exchanged some small talk at the coffee shop. Nancy’s charm won John over, giving John the courage to ask her out for a date. He asked and luckily Nancy accepted. That day for the big date arrived and Nancy had spent 2 hours jogging just so she would look her best in her tight black dress. Sitting in her bedroom facing a round mirror, she put on a “killer” red-colored lipstick. Then came eye-shadow and some eyeliner for that dark, alluring, sexy look. She then puffed a soft foundation onto her delicate face. There was only one word to describe her look: gorgeous.
Nancy then decided to enhance her eye color with a pair of aqua-colored contact lenses. This was her attempt at using contact lenses. Naive and careless as beginners tend to be, she unknowingly had allowed the aqua-colored contact lenses to come in contact with the powdered foundation she had used earlier. Upon inserting her contacts the unfortunate result was almost instant—red and sore eyes!
To prevent this same incident from happening to you, always put contact lenses on before putting on your make-up. Doing so prevents the lenses from accidentally touching make-up particles, which could then end up in your eyes and cause irritation. The rule of thumb is: nothing but water-soluble products should be used on or near the eyes.
Products that are oil based can leave chemicals and irritants behind, which could easily find their way to the surface of your eyes causing you pain and perhaps even ruining your lenses. If you accidentally put the make-up on before the lenses, suck it up and wear eyeglasses or remove the make-up and start all over again. It’s almost impossible to put the lenses on without some smudging or having some residues present on your lenses.
Use a mascara that is fast drying and fiber free. Liquid eye-liner is not recommended for soft contact lens wearers as it can lead to some unintended tinting of soft contact lenses. It has been shown that eye shadow in cream form is the best type for lens wearers. Do not apply eye-color pencil directly on edge of lower eyelid. Instead, apply it only to the edge of your lower eyelash.
Save yourself some grief and pain by not allowing hand creams, sunscreens, and nail polish remover to come into direct contact with the lenses because they can penetrate the lenses. That includes having residue from those items still on your fingers when you insert your eye contact lenses.
When using hairspray, spray it on before you put on the lenses to prevent all that yucky stuff from getting onto to your lenses. Do the same with perfume. Always spray with your eyes closed.
Last but not least, remember to remove your lenses prior to removing your make-up. Apply the make-up remover to your hands and gently rub into lashes. You should use an odor free cotton pad to clean your eyelashes by dampening it with remover. Strike up on the underside of the upper lashes and then down while your eyes closed. For eye shadow removal, use a new odor free cotton pad and strike downward. Rinse your face with cool water to remove all the residue from the make-up remover.
