Disposable Contact Lenses

Disposable contact lenses were introduced in the late 80’s and have quickly become the lenses of choice based upon eye health and ease of care.

Recent advances in materials and design allow for a number of choices such as wear cycles, discard or replacement cycle, and color. Although disposable contact lenses provide more benefits than the traditional lenses (hard contact lenses), they are not for everyone.

People who have complex prescriptions might end up with fewer choices of soft lenses, and a few possibly are not suitable at all. The general discard and replacement cycles for disposable contact lenses run as follows: daily contact lenses, one to two weeks contact lenses, and one to three months contact lenses.

The last category is often called frequent replacement because of the long duration. Wear schedules refer to 2 types: daily and extended wear. With daily, you do not sleep in them. The extended wear version, however, allows you to sleep in them for a period of time not exceeding six consecutive nights. Make sure you consult your eye professional for the proper advice on this issue.

The Benefits of Disposable Contact Lenses

One of the key benefits of daily disposable contact lenses is healthier eyes. Another is that they are more suitable for those who wear them infrequently as the adjustment period is very short. They also give them piece of mind knowing that their contact lenses are new and sanitary.

Mineral, protein, and fat deposits from your own tears can build up on your lenses and may make wearing them uncomfortable. They can eventually cause complications such as infection and irritation. Daily disposables eliminate those concerns. These time-saving and trouble-eliminating disposables are in fact quite affordable. They are just a little more costly than frequent replacement and gas permeable lenses, but they offer more benefits.

Which Replacement Schedule and Wearing Schedule Is Best For You?

Disposable Contact Lenses can now be found to enhance or change your eye color. Some are also designed to correct presbyopia and astigmatism. Assuming you have a fairly generic prescription and thus can find disposable contact lenses to match, your choice of discard and replacement schedule will be based mostly upon the results of using the contacts with your own eyes.

If your eyes deposit protein, mineral, and fat more frequently on the lenses, your replacement schedule will need to be shorter. Given the current popularity of daily disposables, you can now find them available for less than a dollar a day. That very much solves the price problem, right? Besides, the comfort and convenience you experience with disposable lenses are worth every penny.

Tips For Remembering When To Replace Your Contacts?

  • For monthly just change them each time you pay your mortgage, rent or bills.
  • For bi-weekly (every two weeks) change them on your work paydays. Or you
could mark your package of lenses with the replacement dates and do the same on your calendar or daily planner whether it is paper based or electronic.
  • For weekly just select the same day each week to replace them (always take extras with you (and the solution too) in case you might be away from HOME when replacement times rolls around).
  • For daily? Well come on now...hopefully you can easily establish a daily morning routine so that you don't have to worry about this issue again.

Remember: Failure to follow the required discard and replacement schedule can put the health of your eyes at risk. The real key here is to set up a system that you can live with and follow it religiously. Even if you and your eye doctor have chosen extended wear disposables, that doesn’t mean you have to sleep in them.

You can still choose to remove them before going to bed and put them on again tomorrow morning. Doing this allows your eyes to get the rest and oxygen they need to remain healthy as can be. If you are more the lazy type like the rest of us, just switch over to daily disposables and be done with it.
