Proper Care Gives Safer and Happier Wear

  • Follow the directions that come with your lenses.
  • Save the directions for future references.
  • Request a patient information booklet on contact lenses from your eye-care practitioner.
  • Use the types of contact lens-care enzyme cleaners and saline solutions your eye doctor or practitioner suggests.
  • Follow exactly the directions that come with each contact lens-care product.  Don't be hesitant to ask your eye doctor or practitioner for help.
  • Wash and rinse your hands before handling contact lenses. Fragrance-free and oil-free soap is best.
  • Clean, rinse and disinfect reusable contact lenses every time they are removed.
  • Clean, rinse and disinfect the contact lenses again if storage lasts longer than allowed by your disinfecting solution.
  • Clean, rinse and air-dry the contact lens case each time you remove the contact lenses. Then put in fresh solution. To prevent bacteria from growing, replace the case every six months.
  • Get your eye doctor's approval before taking medicines or using topical eye products.
  • Remove your contact lenses and call your eye doctor or practitioner right away if you experience vision changes, redness of the eye, eye discomfort or pain, or excessive tearing.
  • Visit your eye doctor or practitioner every six months (more often if needed) to catch possible problems early.

Watch Out:

  • Never use saliva to wet your lenses.  Saliva has some enzymes that may tear apart your contact lenses.
  • Never use tap water, distilled water, or saline solution made at home with salt tablets for any part of your contact lens care to prevent bacteria or fungus growth. Use only commercial sterile saline solution.
  • Do not mix different brands of contact lens cleaner or solution.
  • Never change your lens-care regimen or products without your eye doctor's approval.
  • Cosmetic lotions, creams or sprays can ruin your contact lenses when touched, so keep them away from your eye contacts.
  • Never wear contact lenses when swimming or in a hot tub.
