Toric Contact Lenses

Toric contact lenses are specifically designed for people with astigmatism, a condition in which your cornea’s curve is irregular.

This condition can be detected in those whose cornea is shaped like an egg or football. Because of that, light penetrating the retina is focused at two points (instead of one) and results in blurred vision, double vision, distorted vision, and eyestrain.

Originally toric lenses came in the form of hard lenses. Advanced technology today has made it possible for astigmatism sufferers, except for those who have a very complex prescription (your eye doctor can confirm that), to correct their vision with more user-friendly soft lenses such as disposables, frequent replacement, multifocals, and colors.

What Are Toric Contact Lenses?

Made from the same materials as regular (spherical) contact lenses, toric contact lenses can be either soft or RGP. The design of the lens is the only difference. Similar to bifocal lenses, toric lenses have two powers, one for the astigmatism; the other, nearsightedness or farsightedness. Toric lenses are weighted by design to avoid rotation on your eyeball that might result in distorted vision.

Cost of Toric Contact Lenses

Due to the complex design of the lenses and their fitting, toric contact lenses usually cost more than other regular spherical contact lenses. Their fitting and  measurement demand more time from your eye-care practitioner.  However, you can definitely save money on certain promotions of toric contact lenses.

Soft Toric Contact Lenses Versus RGP (hard)

Although the majority of patients prefer soft lenses, a small percentage of patients will find that they prefer RGPs over soft contacts. Rigid lenses (RGPs) retain their shape on the cornea better than soft lenses. This results in sharper vision for people who have astigmatism. However, the degree of difference in sharpness is not easily noticeable for most contact lens wearers.

Color, Disposable, and Multifocal Toric Choices
Torics are available in many different colors. You can also find them in the forms of frequent replacement, disposable, and daily disposable.

Most colored toric lenses are non-disposable except in certain colors. Your eye doctor can confirm the best type for you. Multifocal torics are designed to correct presbyopia or myopia in addition to astigmatism.
